Lipreading Classes and Hearing Loss Management

Prevalence of Deafness and Hearing Loss

As part of our lipreading classes, we often discuss how we could make things easier

for ourselves when entertaining visitors.

Sometimes, minor alterations can help us communicate more easily, for example:

Eliminate extraneous noise by

- remembering to turn the TV or radio off when talking with others,

- shutting windows if there is lots of external noise (children playing, traffic, building

work),

- avoiding having noisy animals in the room.

-thinking about lighting and positioning, for ourselves and those we want to

chat with,

- by keeping our backs to the light so that the light falls on to the person we want to

speak to,

- by choosing who to sit with,

- by choosing the best place to sit so we can see everyone or at least see the people we want to talk to.

- being aware of the room layout and furnishings which can help reduce noise.

- by understanding the range of technology available to aid hearing.

These are just some aspects we discuss in addition to practising lipreading in a very

approachable and entertaining way.

So why not try us out? We are very welcoming and believe there is a lot to gain from attending our group sessions on Thursdays.
